An opportunity to explore East and Central London by bike - this route is the eastern half of the full London Sightseer, ideal if you have less time. You will see the Thames transition between tourist boat dominated Westminster and the open estuary at Woolwich. Plenty of classic sights, plus some newer and lesser known ones, with a foray to the Olympic Park and a free ferry crossing, using many traffic free routes plus some of London's relatively new dedicated cycle infrastructure. At least 80% of the route is motor traffic free or traffic calmed - but you still need to be willing and confident to tackle a few busier roads and junctions as the sightseeing has to be balanced with the need to cover the distance. You are never far from opportunities to eat or drink (some of my favourites will be indicated in the route notes). You can go in either direction - the route is mostly the same with minor changes to accommodate one way systems but the views are different, so try it both ways. This ride doesn't lend itself to traditional controls and minimum distance, so it is set as mandatory route with GPS proof of passage only and you can start wherever you like. Minor deviations from the mandatory route to take in more sights (and which make the route longer) are acceptable and some suggested diversions are included in the route notes. The route is close to several mainline railway stations - particularly Waterloo, Fenchurch Street, Liverpool Street, London Bridge and also Stratford (International and domestic), Woolwich and Limehouse. There are some time restrictions related to parks and the ferry which close at night - full details in the route notes. The minimum and maximum speed are very low - some sections are slow (and may require walking short distances) but others allow you to move along a bit faster. Traffic lights are there to be observed and there are a lot of them. Mowing down pedestrians and other road users is considered bad form and should be avoided whoever is in the right! Take your time and your photos and enjoy....
