Devil's Hell

300k event with a massive 6.5 AAA, that's a vast 6,410m of climbing. This is as tough a 300k 'bare bones' event as you are likely ever to encounter - A true audacious challenge - are you up for it? This is an event for experienced Randonneurs. Below is a brief description of the route. The route adds a top loop to what is considered the highest and most challenging section in a 200k event this year - The 10 Peaks Audacious Challenge - to bring it from a 200k 4.5 AAA route to a 300k 6.5 AAA route. Starting from Chepstow, you will explore Tintern and the Wye Valley before more climbing and fine views take you near Devauden, followed by a relatively flat section to Abergavenny. Next, you will head past Longtown Castle after more climbing with the opportunity to rest up at the Village Store. More climbing follows to get you to Hay on Wye, and then you'll ride the lumpy, remote but beautiful sections to Clun, where you can visit Clun Castle before turning. Westward to climb the remote lanes and stunning open moorlands with the option of stopping to view the historic Abbey at Abbeycwmhir. More climbs follow as you head back south to Hay on Wye. Yet more climbs follow, including two significant ascents in Hay-on-Wye, such as the Gospel Path. Next, back to Abergavenny for a trip up the famous Tumble, then back to Devauden via the little used back way off the Tumble. Devauden will serve you up its devilish Star Hill to finish those tired legs off. All the hard work is then done, and you have an easy descent with views of the Severn Bridge and then a flat section to bring you back to Chepstow. Mostly quiet lanes and minor roads with easy navigation. Event Distance Medal is available for purchase.
