Descent of the Stiperstones

Nantwich, top of Welsh Row by the bridge over the River Weaveraudax-uk

A great route through some stunning scenery, all the hills are packed into the middle 100km. See the Shropshire / Powys border from the lofty heights of Long Mountain. Later you will be able to see Long Mountain in the distance from the top of The Stiperstones reminding you of your journey. A flatish start down to Crewgreen, stopping after 50km in Baschurch for the first control. Up the first two big hills to get you to the top of Long Mountain where you stay in the stunning high country for over 5km. Dropping down you then head to Montgomery and then over to Glan-Mule. A decent B road speeds progress up to Churchstoke where a cafe and shop are available (check opening hours). From here it is straight uphill to Old Churchstoke, the stiff climbing gives way to stunning views to compensate. The highlight of the route for me is this next section especially the road parallel to Linley Drive to the climb to the top of the Stiperstones, a quite lane through a wooded area and out into the open again at the top where often red kites circle, looking to pick off a tired randonneur, so don't hang about!. A decent downhill gets you back to the flatlands with most of the day's climbing behind you, a control at the co-op in Bomere Heath should fuel the journey home but the route still passes other options if needed. All told, a superb day out. NOTE 1: There a several descents through the ride including a very fast descent after the Trelystan control to Kingswood and down from The Bog Visitor's Centre that require extra care. NOTE 2 The areas around Crewgreen / Meverley on the way out and also Montford Bridge on the return are on the River Severn flood plain so check with the local environmental agency for flood information before setting of on your journey.
